How to Choose a CPU for Gaming

A practical guide to choosing a gaming CPU by considering frame rates, game engines, cores, threads, platform support and GPU pairing.

Choosing a gaming CPU is not only about the highest specification. The useful choice depends on your target frame rate, graphics card, resolution, games and upgrade budget.

CPU workload in modern games

Games can use the CPU for simulation, game logic, physics, asset preparation and rendering commands. Some titles scale across many threads, while important game threads can still make per-core performance relevant.

Match the CPU to your target FPS

A system targeting a high refresh rate at a lower resolution can place more relative pressure on the processor. If your target is a more moderate frame rate at a high resolution, the GPU may account for more of the frame time.

Consider the platform

When comparing CPUs, include motherboard compatibility, BIOS support, memory compatibility, cooling and future upgrade options. A slightly different processor may have a different total platform cost once these parts are included.

Check the GPU pairing

A very powerful CPU cannot compensate for a graphics card that is already the main rendering limit. Conversely, a high-end GPU may not reach its potential in a CPU-limited workload.

Verify with benchmarks

Use benchmarks for the games you actually play whenever possible. Online calculators are useful for quick comparisons, but measured results provide stronger evidence for a specific build.
